BAD
BREATH IN PATIENTS WITH GUM PROBLEMS
--As
was mentioned in another article in the “News”, the
problem of halitosis is associated with the presence of sulfur
compounds, to be found on the back of the tongue and in periodontal
areas. Indeed, a recent research paper (Figueiredo et al., 2002)
concludes that the presence of bacteria such as TREPONEMA DENTICOLA,
PORRPHYROMONAS GINGIVALIS and BACTEROIDES FORSYTHUS are an important
source of malodor production in the oral cavity. The research,
by means of the BANA test, demonstrates that bacteria are in
fact able to hydrolize the BANA (N-benzoil-DL-arginine-2-napthylamide)

ORAL
PEMPHIGOID AND NECROTIZING ULCERATIVE GENGIVITIS IN THE CHILDHOOD
Cicatricial
pemphigoid is an autoimmune vescicolobullous disease affecting
mucosal tissues in adults; it is rarely present in childhood.
Clinically it may have the same symptoms of the necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis. If
the symptoms do not stop after a two week regimen of antibiotics and oral hygiene, immunofluorescence
studies are required to better evaluate whether it
is a gingivitis or a pemphigoid.

PERIODONTAL DISEASE AND SQUAMOUS ODONTOGENIC TUMOR
--The
squamous odontogenic tumor is a benign neoplasm of the jaw; in
any case , it is locally infiltrative.
This kind of tumor is often asymptomatic, although it may present symptoms of
pain and tooth mobility: that is the reason why clinically it may resemble localized
periodontal disease.
The diagnosis is radiographic and histological.
Radiografically, this tumor appears as a triangular-shaped or semi-circular lucency,
localized in the area of the roots of erupted teeth.
Histologically, the cancer appears as a formation of variably-sized cords of
squamous epithelium, which have occasional vacuolization and keratinization.
Thus, the radiographic and histological evaluation of all lesions found in the
periodontal area is extremely important.

STRESS
AND GUM PROBLEMS : HOW STRESS CAN AGGRAVATE PERIODONTAL DISEASE
--Researchers
at the University of Graz in Austria studied the impact of stress
on 89 patients with different forms of chronic periodontitis.
They concluded that periodontal patients with inadequate
stress behavior strategies are more likely to develop severe periodontal
disease.

The "News" will be updated from time to time. Try to visit this
site periodically, in the same way I will try to return to Harvard
as often as possible, or to obtain information at a distance. If
you can,try to "review" even the static sections of the web-site
itself. As the Latins said : "Repetita iuvant" (=repeated things,
help). And maybe - in this case- "new things" and "repeated things" will
help you make constructive connections and perhaps prevent more
serious problems or costly cures, dental or non ! For news on previous
